The PE department hosted a primary school ‘Alternative Olympic Festival’ just before Christmas, involving twelve schools and over one hundred students.
The event was led by James Mandry (School Games Organiser), Mr Buxton (School Sports Coordinator) and a team of sports leaders from Theale Green School’s Leadership Academy. The activities were fully inclusive and involved a range of activities such as curling, boccia, seated volleyball and archery. Competing schools were: Calcot, Garland, Pangbourne, Long Lane, Springfield, St Finian’s, Bradfield, Theale, Aldermaston, Brookfields, Ashford Hill and Thatcham Park
Mrs Stevens, a teacher from St Finian’s primary school said:
“Thank you for giving children the opportunity to participate in tournaments and festivals at Theale Green. Our children absolutely loved the Alternative Olympic Festival. You welcomed two teams of four, who flourished and loved this opportunity. This experience not only offered them sporting opportunities, but boosted their confidence and self-esteem. Among our team we had four SEN children; one with a heart condition and one with cerebral palsy. We also had two normally reluctant participants who loved the inclusive activities. Your Young Leaders were supportive and understanding of all their needs.”
Mr Buxton said:
“The festival was a great success which enabled students to compete against each other in activities they would not normally do in their curriculum. There was a real sense of fun and enjoyment from all involved. We are incredibly proud of our sports leaders who led and officiated the activities. They were great ambassadors for our school and worked tirelessly during the event.”
