The students had been working on the show since September and rose to the challenge of tackling the complexities of the score with enthusiasm and skill. Ella Vallance brought a real emotional depth to the character of Jean Valjean, a man haunted by a past misdeed and hunted by the relentless Javert (Riley Stannett) throughout his life. His path crossed with the tragic Fantine ( Lexie Whitter) leading to a lifelong obligation to look after her daughter, Cosette (Faye Phillips and Hannah Crowson). Cosette found herself drawn to the student Marius (Evan Smith) who was himself blind to the attentions of the lovestruck Eponine (Melissa Carter). Exemplary clowning was provided by Dhillon Feasey and Lily Lambert as the Thenardiers, that acted as a sharp comic relief against the trauma of the July Rebellion led by Enjolras (Alex Bednarczyk) and his fellow students. The whole cast came together to produce a performance that was exhilarating and moving in equal measure.
It was an incredible team effort with an incredible set (inspired by Theale’s own John Piper) from Mrs Clark, very atmospheric lighting designed and operated by Jacob Dearing and sound skillfully run by Freya Stevens.
See you in July for Live and Let Fly!
