The School Council at Theale Green School
What is the purpose of School Council?
The School Council exists as a key part of whole school governance. The School Council represent the student body. Their role is to:
- review, discuss, plan and action identified areas of school development,
- identify key issues that affect students and advise senior leadership of these,
- liaise with student body in tutor drop-ins and represent the views of the student body,
- devise and implement plans to aid in school improvement,
- present initiatives and plans to the student body in assemblies, tutor drop ins and video presentations,
- represent and act as ambassadors for the school at open events.
Who are the Student Council?
The Theale Green School Council are a group of 14 students – (2 from each year group). They are led by the Head Team. They meet once a month with the facilitating member of staff and a member of SLT. The Head team report to the Headteacher. The school council representatives are also the year prefects.
The students are drawn from different groups representing the student body in terms of gender, ethnicity, special educational needs and disadvantaged. The students apply for the role and are chosen through an interview process with the facilitating teacher and the Head Team.
The student body is made aware of the identity of the members of the school council through tutor presentations, notice boards and assemblies.
What is the role of the facilitating teacher?
The facilitating teacher hosts the after school meetings – ensures that the meeting remains focused and provides a staff voice where necessary.
What is the role of the Head Team?
The Head team run the school council meetings. They minute the meetings and share the minutes with school council members, SLT and the facilitating teacher through Teams. They also report back any pertinent issues to the Headteacher in their monthly meetings.
What is the role of the Senior Leadership Team?
The Senior Leadership Team set three actions for the school council to achieve each academic year. These actions will be linked to school improvement. These may include consultations or research that require student voice.
