Theale Green School is to benefit from a new fitness gym with a rowing room thanks to a cash boost of £30,000 from Get Berkshire Active.

TGS is one of 10 Berkshire schools to benefit from the Opening School Facilities fund – a three-year DfE funding programme that supports schools in opening their sporting facilities to the local community and school users outside of the normal school day.

Get Berkshire Active is managing the fund for Berkshire, with its total pot for the region being around £600,000.

Theale’s share enables it to set up a new fitness gym with a rowing room, and also to train a current member of support staff as a level 2 fitness coach to manage the fitness area after school for students. Staff will have dedicated times before, after (and even during) school where they can use the facility for no charge. This supports the Well School culture the school is working hard to embed.

The gym will be set up in a currently unused area in the Brookes Centre and it is hoped that it will be up and running for staff, students and the local community by September.

A year two funding bid will complete the rest of the gym equipment and include the cost of a gym supervisor in the evenings and also a separate after-school coach. At the same time the school is starting discussions on the development of a 3G pitch.
