Theale Green School are delighted to announce that the PE department has been awarded ‘The Berkshire Physical Activity Lockdown Hero’ award at the 9th Get Berkshire Active (GBA) Awards.

This years’ GBA awards are ‘celebrating victories big and small and recognising local heroes, which is becoming more important than ever’. With only one award category this year, GBA were looking for organisations that have positively impacted others through physical activity and sport in Berkshire during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the majority of students at home, instead of in the classroom, the PE department had to think differently in order to get students motivated and maintaining their physical activity. Since March 2020, Theale Green’s PE department have been delivering sport, physical activity and wellbeing sessions in an innovative way and stepping outside of their comfort zones.

The team have used social media to encourage students, parents and staff to be active, creating ‘can-do’ confidence and boosting morale. Making sure everyone could take part, they used make-shift equipment such as rolled-up socks as a ball, and a washing basket for a hoop!

As well as regular challenges set on Instagram, followers were able to take part in remote fixtures with another school, bringing togetherness and competitive spirit.

Theale Green’s PE department were also chosen to promote National Schools’ Sports Week with Sky News last year.

Due to the pandemic, the GBA Awards ceremony will not be going ahead onsite this year, however the awards campaign is being featured on social media throughout February, as well as being a daily feature on BBC Radio Berkshire.
